Japan has only three authentic carillons, but a carillon in my home town is going to be forgotten and abandoned. I'd like to revive it and let it sing again as I was encouraged by the magical sounds of the carillon of my town in my young days. This is the reason why I have to become a carillonneur.
I know very few are interested in the detailed reasons, but they are following anyway.
日本には、正式なカリヨンが３つあり、その１つは私の故郷にあります。でも、そのカリヨンは演奏されることなく、忘れ去られつつあります。私が若い頃に聞いたカリヨンを復活させ、もう一度歌わせたい。これが、私がカリヨン奏者になりたい理由です。

Reason 1: The Carillon in Huis Ten Bosch eased my life when I was young
理由１：ハウステンボスのカリヨンは若い頃の私を励ましてくれたから
The Carillon of Huis Ten Bosch always told me "Even if everything looks ruined, you will win back all or otherwise better ".
ハウステンボスのカリヨンを聞いてると、「全てが台無しになっても、大抵のことはなんとかなる」 って気になってくるんですよ。
What is Huis Ten Bosch ? / ハウステンボスって何？
Huis Ten Bosch is a theme-park located in my home town; Sasebo-city, Nagasaki, Japan. "Huis Ten Bosch" means "House in
forest" in Netherlandish.
As the name shows It is a "small town with European-style buildings in forest" which copies after Holland, and it is known as one of the biggest theme-park in Japan for its Flower Festival, Music Celebration, Illumination Celebration and of course its forest. Everything there is just so beautiful.
ハウステンボスは私のふるさとにあるテーマパークです。「ハウステンボス」はオランダ語で「森の家」と言う意味。
その名が示すように、オランダを模した森の中の小さなヨーロッパで、花の祭典や音楽の祭典、イルミネーション、そして森があるテーマパークとして知られています。そこでは全てが美しい。
The Land of Huis Ten Bosch used to be left to rot with no plan / ハウステンボスの土地はぺんぺん草も生えない荒れた土地だった
However, for long years, the land (of current Huis Ten Bosch) had been covered with sludge with no plant, and
been left to rot, since it was a landfill, failing at
attraction of enterprises and factories.
Forty years ago, nobody could
had imagined the abandoned land would turn into a theme-park with flowers and trees, I bet.
けれども、現在ハウステンボスのある土地は、ヘドロに覆われ、ぺんぺん草も生えないような荒れた土地でした。工場誘致に失敗した埋立地だったのです。
40年前に、その土地が花と木でいっぱいのテーマパークになると想像できる人はいなかったでしょう。

The founder of Huis Ten Bosch began to ameliorate
soil, then planted trees and flowers to recover the environment of the land
over years and years, and
then construct canals and built hotels, shops, museums and a tower.
Finally Huis Ten Bosch was opened on March 25th, 1992.
ハウステンボスの創設者は、土壌改善から始めました。木を植え、花を植え、何年もかけて自然を取り戻したのです。そして運河をつくり、ホテルやお店や博物館や塔を建てたのです。
1992年3月25日、ハウステンボスはオープンしました。
The Carillon of Huis Ten Bosch is the symbol of resurgence to me/ ハウテンボスのカリヨンは私にとって復活のシンボル
I still remember that my first day at
Huis Ten Bosch which was filled with tulips, music on the street, and moreover the magic melody from the carillon.
Since that day, the sounds from carillon has been the symbolic representation of resurgence to me, although I didn't know carillons are "playable" music instrument, and even the name yet.
ハウステンボスに初めて言った日のことを、まだ、覚えています。見渡す限りのチューリップ、道にあふれる音楽、そして、カリヨンから聞こえてくる魔法のメロディー。
その日から、カリオンの音は、私にとっては復活のシンボルになりました。それが演奏可能な楽器であることを当時の私は、まだ、知らなかったけれど。
Reason 2 : The Peace Tower Carillon encouraged me when I was new to Canada
理由2 : カナダのピースタウンのカリヨンはカナダに移民したばかりの私を励ましてくれたから
As like many new immigrants to Canada, I had both concerns and hopes in my mind when I was new to Canada, but the sound from the peace-tower-carillon always encouraged me for new challenges. At that time, I still didn't know carillons are "playable" music instrument, yet.
I had the carillon in my new city! The fact was enough to me.
多くの移民がそうであるように、私も期待と不安が入り混じった気持ちを持っていました。でも、ピースタワーからのカリヨンはいつも私を励ましてくれました。それが演奏可能な楽器であることを当時の私は、まだ、知らなかったけれど。
新しい街にもカリヨンがある、その事実だけで十分でした。
Reason 3 : Canada has only one university which has a certified carillon study program, and the university is in my city
理由 3 : カナダにたった一つだけあるカリヨンプログラムが私の住む街にあるから
Canada has only 11 carillons and only one university program for the certified carillonneur, and it is such a coincidence that I live in the city with the only one program
!
カナダにはカリヨンが11あり、カリヨンプログラムがたった１つだけあります。なんと、私はそのプログラムのある市に住んでいるのです。
Finally, I learned carillons are musical instrument playable by people / やっとカリヨンが人による演奏が可能な楽器であることを知る
The end of June in 2018, I read
an article written by Japanese carillonneur, and I finally found the followings.
- carillons are musical instrument playable
- the carillon of Huis Ten Bosch was no longer in use
2018年6月、
日本人カリヨン奏者によって書かれた１つの記事 が目にとまりました。そしてついに、以下のことを知ります。
- カリヨンは人が演奏できる楽器であるということ
- ハウステンボスのカリヨンが使われていないこと
Therefore I know I am crazy, but I will be a carillonneur! / だから、カリヨン奏者になることにした、我ながらバカと思うけど
I know I am crazy but I can not stop myself to try entering the carillon program. Of course there is no guarantee of success.
Even if I can complete the the program, there is still no guarantee of playing the carillon in Huis Ten Bosch.
我ながらバカだなーと思うのですが、とりあえず、この冬、私が住む街にある大学の音楽学部カリヨン学科を受験することにしました。そもそも合格できるかどうかもサッパリわかりませんが。
さらに、ちゃんと卒業してもハウステンボスのカリヨン奏者になれる保証なんてありませんが。
I (will/may/could?) meet carillonneurs if I learn the carillon. / カリヨンを習うことで、カリヨン奏者たちと出会える（かも）
As I mentioned there is no guarantee of anything, however I believe I will/may/could meet carillonneurs if I learn the carillon. And if I see many carillonneurs, I may be able to find a carillonneur who can play Huis Ten Bosch's carillon, even if I can not become one.
カリヨン学科を受験しても、何の保証があるわけでもないけれど、カリヨンについて学ぶことで、カリヨン奏者たちと出会える可能性は高まるし、その出会いの中から、ハウステンボスのカリヨンを演奏してもよいと考える、現在活躍中のカリヨン奏者と知り合う足がかりになるかも知れないなーと思っています。
Conclusion / まとめ
Anyway, I will learn how to play the carillon hopefully become a certified carillonneur.
I spent my young age in a city with a carillon, living in a city with a carillon, and the city has only one carillon program in Canada. Those are enough reasons to convince me to be a carillonneur, aren't they?
まあ、とにかく、カリヨンを学びたいわけです。だって、カリヨンのある街で若い頃を過ごし、カリヨンのある場所に現在住んでて、住んでるところにカリヨン学科があるんだもの。思い込みは重要ですっ！（笑）
