What is Carillon?
カリヨンって何？

A carillon is a musical instrument that consists of a group of at least 23 cast bronze bells (2 octaves). It is typically housed in a bell tower of a church or municipal building. A carillon-like instrument with fewer than 23 bells is called a chime.

It is played from a keyboard as well as pedals, and each key is called a baton. Each baton connected to a single bell tuned in chromatic order like a piano. Some instruments are capable of automatic play by use of cylinder like a music box.

カリヨンは、23以上の銅製の鐘（２オクターブ以上）からなる楽器です。大抵の場合、教会や公共施設の建物に設置されています。カリヨンに似た楽器で鐘の数が23未満のものはチャイムと呼ばれています。

カリヨンは鍵盤楽器で、鍵のことはバトンと呼ばれています。バトンは１つ１つ別の鐘と繋がっており、鐘はピアノと同じような順序で半音ごとに並んでいます。カリヨンによっては、オルゴールのようにシリンダーで自動演奏することも可能です。

There are not many "real" carillons around anymore... Only about 500 in Europe (about 90 in Belgium and about 180 in Nederland), about 180 in North America (including 11 in Canada).

During World War II, many bronze bells were collected and melted for different usage. The parliament carillon in Canada is one of the survivors, though.

In Asia, the history of the carillon is relatively new, although bronze bells have been existing since more than a couple thousands ago. There are only 6 carillons in Asia, and three of them are in Japan.

正式なカリヨンはあまり多くありません。ヨーロッパに約500（ベルギーに約90、オランダに約180）、北アメリカには、カナダの11含めて約180台あります。

第二次世界大戦中に銅製の鐘は集められ溶かされて別の用途に使われました。なお、国会議事堂（カナダの）カリヨンは生き残りました。

銅製の鐘自体は数千年以上前から存在しますが、アジアのカリヨンの歴史は新しいです。アジア地区には６台のカリヨンがあり、そのうち３台は日本にあります。
